If you need to relinquish ownership of your dog to Starfish, please review all of the information below prior to submitting your request.

We know that surrendering your pet is a very difficult decision. We know you do not take this lightly, and neither do we. We are often able to provide suggestions, advice, and resources to help you keep your family together which is the ultimate goal. Please note that there is currently a crisis in rescue. Dogs are being surrendered to shelters at an alarming rate and subsequent euthanasia rates are high. If it is AT ALL POSSIBLE for you to keep your dog and rehome them on your own, you need to consider doing this.

Did you adopt your dog from Starfish?

Please note that you are contractually required to contact us and discuss the return. If you have a suitable home for your dog, that will usually work out, but we do need to update our records with this information.

We want to help everyone, but the truth is that we simply cannot. Our commitment is to Starfish dogs. If your dog was not adopted from our rescue, we can still review the information to determine if we can help or if perhaps we can network to find somewhere that can.

Please complete this form (scroll down) and be as detailed as possible. This is critical so that we can provide the appropriate assistance or, if you end up surrendering, we are successful in rehoming your dog. Please note we may ask for additional information at a later date as well.

We will ask for medical information and request that your dog is up to date on vaccinations and heartworm testing. We are a non-profit organization and appreciate your effort to ensure that there are no additional medical expenses involved for us. If you cannot afford to do this, please provide information on any vetting that has been done. We will not turn down your dog if they are not up to date.

Fees and Supplies

Although we generally do not charge a rehoming fee, we would be grateful for any donation you could make to help offset the cost of providing medical or behavioral services to your dog. You may donate here: our PayPal donation page. Please also send your dog with any supplies you have such as a collar, leash, food bowl, blanket, toys, or bed. This is going to be an extremely stressful time for them, so anything that is familiar would be helpful.

We will do everything we can to assist you and often have great success in rehoming dogs. However, we are not obligated to take any dog into rescue. This is especially true if your dog presents a danger to another person or animal. We are a foster home based rescue and we must and will prioritize the safety of our foster families.
